Adding a ceiling fan by yourself is relatively easy, if you are purely replacing a light fixture that is already in the correct location or for example rewiring your security system. All of the wiring will already be available, hence the only challenge will be replacing the old workbox with one that is authorized for the weight of a ceiling fan. It could be very deadly if you do not exchange your current workbox to something that can take on the added weight of the ceiling fan.
Before you begin your project, go through the guidelines for the fan you have selected, and make sure that you have all of the needed tools. If you plan to make the fan on a cathedral ceiling, you must get an extension to ensure the fan wont be so high up. Once you are ready for the real installation, be sure that the breaker is turned off, so no power is delivering to the light you are changing. Take out the light fixture, and determine if the workbox that is already there can handle the extra weight.
Nearly all workboxes are not made for ceiling fans, you will need extra support.
You can do this fairly easily if you are able to gain access to the light fixture from the attic. To increase support, you merely nail a 2×4 in between the ceiling rafters so that it touches the top of the workbox. Check the 2×4 is secured in its place, and then bolt the box to the wood.
If you accomplish it properly, the fan should be effectively supported by the 2×4. If you dont get admission to the attic, you will need to place a cross bracing in your ceiling. Performing this is more of a challenge and may not be as secure as using a 2×4 but it is the greatest you can do if you dont possess access to the attic. After you have put the fan together in line with the instructions, you are ready to install the fan to your light fixture.
